When to Replace Your Plumbing Fixtures

Do you live in an old home or one that needs some work? One of the first signs of potential issues is plumbing. This is especially noticeable in spaces with a lot of use, like a bathroom or kitchen. So how do you know if it’s time to upgrade your plumbing? Here are a few warning signs to look out for.

Water Pressure

Over time, constant use of your home’s plumbing system affects the way it works. This can be seen with a drop in water pressure during showers or while doing the dishes. If you notice any of these issues, have a licensed plumber take a look at your pipes. The solution may be to upgrade a part or consider installing a new system to ensure your plumbing works efficiently.

Leaks

Another tell-tale sign of a plumbing issue is a leak. You can temporarily solve a minor leak with a DIY product, but over time these do not hold up to heavy use. These types of leaks are common in any kind of plumbing fixture but occur most often underneath sinks and toilets. A leak might not seem like a big deal, but it can drastically increase your water bill. Water can also pool underneath the leak, resulting in mold and mildew growth. If you store cleaning products or other items under the kitchen sink, for example, a leak in the pipes can damage those items as well. Don’t wait until it gets worse to address the problem – it can save you both time and money!

Cracks, Rust or Mold

Any sign of mold, rust, or cracks in the pipes indicates the need to replace your plumbing. If you have a rusty fixture in your bathroom or kitchen, you probably have an older system. In older homes, you may even see rust build up in the water from one of the faucets. Cracks in plumbing fixtures contribute to leaks which, as stated above, can increase your water bill and damage the interiors of your home if not caught early.  Mold and mildew growth occur when water goes undetected in warm confined spaces like under a sink. If you notice any of the issues, talk with a plumber to discuss repairing or even replacing your plumbing fixtures or systems. While it might seem like an investment at first, it’s worth the peace of mind to avoid these issues in the future.
